It was an emotional day on Saturday, 31 October in Titahi Bay, as the community said farewell to St Pius X School after more than 70 years of providing Catholic education.

The afternoon began with a Mass next door at St Pius X Church. The church was full with current and former students, staff and community members.

In his homily, Archbishop Paul said a school is much more than a building. “The faith lessons, and values nurtured will continue in this community,” he said.

“As a Catholic community, we know the Church is bigger than any one building or institution. We are part of one family in Christ.”

Following the Mass were speeches, including from Archbishop Paul and St Pius X principal Dr John Young, and performances from students in the St Pius X School hall.

Opened with 51 pupils in 1954, by 1955 the St Pius X School roll grew to 75. It continued to grow, reaching a roll of 383 pupils by 1958.

The school will officially close at the end of the year. Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira will be opening a new school in the site from 2027.
