It was an emotional day on Sunday, 30 August in Wilton, as the Otari Parish community said farewell to St Thomas More Church at the final Mass to be held in the building.
Opened in 1969 by Cardinal Peter McKeefry, the cosy church was full for the Mass. Many tears were shed, but there was also lots of laughter and smiles.
The Mass was led by Archbishop Paul. “Today is also a day of gratitude, for we give thanks for all that’s happened here,” he said in his homily. “This place was built out of faith, out of generosity, and out of commitment.”
He added: “The faith that’s been living here is not being closed today. The Church will continue, because the people of God will continue.”
He ended his homily with some words to reflect on.
“Our home is not simply a building made by human hands. Our home is in Christ.”
Following the Mass, which included the Eucharist in two kinds, parishioners shared tea, kai and memories in the lounge, with the food from Chalet Caterers and assisted by two St Mary’s College students.
