National Centennial Mass for Venerable Meri Hohepa Suzanne Aubert at St Mary of the Angels

Throughout 2026, the whānau from the Home of Compassion are commemorating this Centennial year that marks the passing of founder, Venerable Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert. A special commemorative Mass is to be held, celebrated by New Zealand’s Catholic Bishops. The Mass will reflect Meri Hōhepa’s deep commitment to working among Māori.

Date: Sunday, 4 October

Time: 2pm

Place: St Mary of the Angels (17 Boulcott Street, Wellington Central, Wellington 6011)

Attendees should be seated by 1.45pm. Please note parking is not available on the church site. However, there are public parking buildings and street parking spaces nearby.

Meri Hōhepa’s funeral at St Mary of the Angels Church on 5 October 1926 was reported to have been the largest ever held for a woman in New Zealand – such was the esteem in which she was held for her groundbreaking leadership in social welfare initiatives and caring for the most vulnerable.
